The 52nd issue of Energynomics Magazine has been launched and is available online, free of charge, together with all previous editions. 184 pages of interviews, analyses and perspectives on Romania’s and the region’s energy sector capture an industry experiencing two realities at once: the consequences of years without sufficient investment and the first, still barely visible, results of a new investment cycle.

The Q3/2026 edition comes at an important turning point. The implementation period of Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan ended on 31 August, but the reforms, support mechanisms and investments it set in motion are now entering the decisive test of execution. The next assessment of the energy sector will no longer be measured only in milestones and targets, but in MW built, available grid capacity, financed investments and energy actually delivered.

At the same time, the summer of 2026 showed how fragile the system can remain during difficult periods, even as the market is changing at unprecedented speed. Projects are moving from paper into construction and commercial operation, storage is moving from presentations to investment decisions and commissioning, capital is returning to generation, infrastructure and technology, and flexibility is becoming a central requirement of the new energy system.

This edition looks at precisely these changes: project financing and bankability, energy security, grid capacity, storage and ancillary services, the rapid expansion of solar energy, the new wind investment cycle, infrastructure digitalisation, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, offshore wind, European competition in the equipment market, domestic resources and the investments needed to support an energy transition built on a secure and flexible system.

A few highlights from this issue

The interview with Giacomo Billi, founder and CEO of Alive Capital, starts from a clear thesis: storage, aggregation, flexible consumption, intraday optimisation and system services will become essential infrastructure. Alive Capital has completed construction of the Stâlpu 1, Stâlpu 2, Nanov and Mihăilești projects and is expanding its regional model. Billi explains why the next competition in energy will not be won by simply accumulating MW, but by the ability to turn every MWh into value, using forecasting, dispatching, aggregation, energy management, hedging, storage and supply within a single platform. Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, says Romania has now passed 8.5 GW of installed solar capacity and could reach its 10 GW target for 2030 as early as 2027. Romania added around 1.8 GW in the first six months of 2026, up from 1.5 GW a year earlier, with unusually balanced growth: roughly 1 GW came from utility-scale plants and 800 MW from prosumers. Under SolarPower Europe’s medium scenario, Romania is expected to become the sixth-largest source of new solar capacity in the EU between 2026 and 2030. READ MORE!

For Adrian Ilie, Managing Director of Enercon Romania, Romania is not merely a sales market but a regional hub. The expertise and infrastructure developed locally support both Romanian wind farms and projects in other European markets. The interview shifts the discussion beyond installed MW: the first stage of a project lasts only a few years, while operation and service extend over a quarter of a century, and local added value is built through people, expertise, infrastructure and the capacity to support assets throughout their operating life. Beyond the cover stories, the edition brings project financing to the forefront through interviews with Raluca Nicolescu, acting Director General of the Investment and Development Bank, and Cristian Nacu, Senior Country Officer for Romania at IFC; energy security and Romania’s relationship with Brussels through the conversation with Sebastian Burduja; and perspectives on technology, infrastructure and new energy models from Vlad Doicaru (Huawei Romania), Daniel Barciuc (Siemens Romania), Ondrej Safar and other industry leaders.

The edition looks at the energy system as a whole rather than at technologies in isolation: from financing, public policy, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence to renewables, grids, storage, flexibility, natural gas and energy security. The common theme is execution. Romania has more projects, mechanisms and sources of capital than it did only a few years ago; what will matter now is the ability to turn them into infrastructure that works and energy that is available when it is needed.
