The National Electricity Transmission Company Transelectrica announces that it hosted, on July 29, 2026, a technical workshop dedicated to the Georgia – Romania Submarine Cable project (Black Sea Submarine Cable – BSSC), one of the European Union’s strategic energy infrastructure projects in the Black Sea region.
The event brought together representatives of Transelectrica, Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE) – the Transmission and System Operator of Georgia, CESI, the Maritime Hydrographic Directorate, the Border Police, as well as the institutions and consultants involved in the development of the project.
The workshop aimed to assess the progress made and coordinate the next stages of implementation, analyzing in particular the preparation of the Black Sea bed study (Seabed Study/Marine Survey), the submarine cable route, the authorization of the Romanian component, the activity calendar and cost estimates.
BSSC is a project of strategic importance for regional and European energy security, and technical cooperation between the partners involved is a relevant element for its maturation and implementation. The workshop organized yesterday reflects the joint commitment to develop a project that will contribute to the diversification of energy sources, increase the resilience of the power systems and strengthen the interconnection between the European Union and the South Caucasus region.
At this stage, activities are focused on the preparation of the marine study, which will confirm the optimal route of the cable and provide the technical data necessary for the design of the infrastructure. At the same time, the update of the feasibility study and the economic, financial and regulatory analyses are being prepared that will inform future decisions on the implementation of the project.
An important topic of the meeting was the Romanian component of the project, analyzing the proposed route, the authorization process and the technical conditions necessary for the integration of the new interconnection into the Electric Transmission Network and the National Power System, including the investments necessary for the integration of a capacity of 1,300 MW in the Constanta area.
The project currently benefits from financial support from the World Bank for the preparation phase and is being evaluated within the TYNDP 2026 process, after its inclusion on the second European list of Projects of Common Interest and Projects of Mutual Interest (PCI/PMI). These stages have an important role in consolidating the European status of the project and in accessing funding dedicated to strategic energy infrastructure.
