Rolls-Royce, Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA), Clarke Energy, Aquarius Projects Associates, Rezolv Energy, and NextEnergy are just some of the British companies which are operating in or preparing enter the local energy sector, according to Chris Frean, Head of the Economic Diplomacy at the British Embassy in Romania. According to the Romanian Chamber of Commerce, there are actually 6,500 British firms active in Romania, the diplomat said. “This is quite an astonishing number”, Chris Frean admitted, at the conference “More renewables for Romania”, organized by Energynomics.

”Rolls Royce is known for their excellent small modular reactors (SMRs). We continue to support them in their activities and their attempt to win business here and we hope this will come to fruition”, said Frean. A Rolls Royce SMR can produce 270 tons of hydrogen, provide heating for 450,000 people, and provide electricity for about a million homes.

He added that UK is one of the world’s leading offshore wind countries and the British government has close discussions with the Romanian energy ministry to provide any knowledge on this matter, as Romania is set to invest in its first offshore wind projects in the coming years.

He also informed the conference that the UK has recently created the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) which will be twice the size of the old Department of Energy and Climate Change. ”The new department will give the net zero the attention it deserves. One of its goals is to set the UK on the path to energy independence, in other words delivering energy security”, said Frean.

Another goal of the new department is to bring bills down ”as soon as possible„ and to keep them down so the household electricity prices in the UK are among the cheapest in Europe. By this, the government will be delivering to consumers security of supply, according to Frean.

Also, the British government aims to decarbonize the energy sector, delivering climate security, and wants to play its part in reducing inflation and boosting growth, delivering economic security. ”Distinct those may be, they all are entwined and rely upon each other. So the key mission of the new department will be to work across different disciplines and make the best use of our expertise”, he added.
