R.Power has completed the installation of battery units at its 127 MW/254 MWh energy storage project in Scornicești, Olt County, bringing the project into the final phase of construction. The Warsaw-headquartered independent power producer expects the facility to be connected to the grid in late 2026 or early 2027.

The system will be connected directly to the high-voltage national transmission grid operated by Transelectrica. According to R.Power, the grid connection is a major undertaking that goes well beyond a standard project and has required extensive design work.

EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contractor Parapet began construction in spring 2026, working alongside R.Power’s in-house EPC management team. Over the past three months, foundations have been laid and all 46 battery units and 23 containerised medium-voltage transformer stations have been installed.

R.Power describes the facility as its first utility-scale battery storage project in Romania, one of the first of its kind in the country and one of the largest such projects set to enter operation in Central and Eastern Europe.

Financing was secured in June 2026 through a package worth 46 million euros. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided 44 million euros in investment and bridge financing. Polish development bank Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK) issued a bank guarantee of 2.3 million euros to secure the long-term optimisation contract with GEN-I, the regional trading partner. The project is co-owned through a joint venture with France’s Eiffel Investment Group.

“As a utility-scale asset connected to the national transmission grid, Scornicesti BESS will actively support the stabilisation of Romania’s energy system,” said Florin Federenciuc, R.Power Country Head for Romania. He noted that the company had contracted its first Romanian PV assets just two years earlier.

Scornicești is part of R.Power’s European battery storage portfolio of 1.6 GW/5.8 GWh. According to the company, projects in operation and under construction in Central and Eastern Europe total 0.9 GW/3 GWh. A further 0.7 GW/2.8 GWh comprises projects described by the company as commercialised and ready to build (“commercialised, ready-to-build”).
