OMV Petrom, the largest integrated energy producer in Southeastern Europe, is expanding its electric mobility infrastructure by adding fast charging services for electric trucks, with 400 kW stations in its network. In Miercurea Sibiului, on the A1 motorway, the company now operates the largest electric charging hub in Romania, with 34 fast charging points in total – 17 in each direction, 16 for cars and 18 for trucks.
The charging stations are of high capacity: those for electric cars each have a power of 300 kW and allow charging in 15-20 minutes. The charging stations for trucks have a capacity of 400 kW and allow charging an electric truck in just 1.5 – 2 hours. In comparison, stations with a capacity below 25 kW require a whole night to complete the charge.
The total installed power for vehicle charging is 10 MW (5 MW each way).
Payment for charging services can be made either through payment terminals installed near the charging stations, as well as through the OMV eMotion mobile application available in the AppStore and Google Play, which facilitates customers’ access to information on the location of charging points and their status, as well as payment in an easy way.
“Our strategy for 2030 includes the development of the most extensive network of electric charging stations in Romania, as part of our effort to support the decarbonization of transport. The A1 motorway is one of Romania’s main trade routes, part of the pan-European TEN-T corridor,” said Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom management board, responsible for Refining and Marketing.
“With this hub in Miercurea Sibiului, we offer carriers and drivers more than just the possibility of refueling – either with conventional or electric fuel. We have created a perfect space for breaks, coffee or snacks and shopping. We want to differentiate ourselves through the quality of products and services and the modern infrastructure that we make available to our customers,” said Adrian Nicolaescu, head of Retail activity at OMV Petrom Marketing.
The stations and related facilities were built under a concession agreement concluded between OMV Petrom Marketing and the National Road Infrastructure Administration Company (CNAIR). In addition to fuel stations, the spaces on the motorway also include extensive parking for cars, trucks and coaches, public toilets, a service area – water, air, vacuum cleaner, a shop area with over 3,000 carefully selected products and the Viva gastro area – with coffee and quality gastronomy – hot dishes, sandwiches, salads and desserts, prepared daily by the station’s chefs. In addition, there is also access to services such as toll payment, money transfer, vignette payment.
OMV Petrom operates a network of 780 gas stations under the Petrom and OMV brands in Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria and Serbia. The company has developed a network of around 1,000 charging points for electric vehicles in the region. In line with its strategy, OMV Petrom is expanding its electric vehicle charging infrastructure, aiming to install over 5,000 charging points by 2030, becoming the largest provider of electric mobility services in Romania. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.
