Romania reports a 70% drop in registrations of fully electric cars in April

Registrations of new cars decreased by 24% in April 2025, compared to the same period the previous year, while fully electric cars reported a decrease of 70% and a market share of 2.2%, according to data from the General Directorate of Driving Licenses and Registrations (DGPCI), processed by the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA).

According to the source cited by Agerpres, cars, which represent approximately 83% of the total market, recorded, in the reference interval, a volume of 9,910 units.

In terms of market share, the SUV segment is in first position, with a share of 53.9%, down 14.8% compared to April last year, followed by the C-Class – with a share of 25.7% (-36.2%) and the B-Class – with a share of 14.1% (-22.4%).

Depending on the type of fuel of the registered cars, in April 2025, gasoline engines recorded a decrease of 44.3%, to a share of 24.8%, while diesel engines decreased by 26.1% (share of 9.5%).

According to official data, cars equipped with mild-hybrid engines reported an increase in registrations of 10%, reaching a share of 28.8% of the total car market.

On the other hand, ‘electrified’ cars, namely electric cars – which can be charged from an external source of electricity (BEV and PHEV), as well as mild-hybrid and full hybrid cars (which also have electric propulsion without charging from an external source of electricity) – hold, in the fourth month of this year, a market share of 54.9%.

In this context, full electric cars held, in April, a 2.2% share of the market, compared to 5.5% in April 2024, while plug-in hybrid cars hold a 5.4% market share (in April 2024 they had 3.3%).

In the first four months of 2025, the top three best-selling 100% electric cars are: Dacia Spring – with 1,022 units and a decrease of 31.4%, year-on-year, Tesla Model 3 (with 175 units) and Leapmotor T03 (with 134 units).

In the Plug-In car segment, the podium is occupied, in order, by Ford Kuga – with 199 units (8.7% compared to April 2024), Volkswagen Golf (177 units) and Mercedes Benz GLC (130).

Also, hybrid cars, without recharging from external sources, have Dacia Duster in first place – with 1,124 units, followed by Toyota Corolla – with 995 units, and Toyota RAV4 – with 932 units.
