    MetaWealth, a European real estate investment platform, announces its entry into the advanced battery energy storage systems (BESS) market through the development of several large-scale storage projects in Romania. The move comes amid accelerating investment in renewable energy, which is amplifying the need for flexibility and balancing services in energy systems, given the still limited capacity of battery storage.

    Romania, a “textbook case” for the need for flexibility

    In a press release, the company points out that Romania generates almost half of its electricity from renewable sources, but still has modest battery storage capacity. The imbalance between the pace of renewable production development and the flexibility available in the grid is increasing investor interest in BESS projects treated as essential energy infrastructure, not just as emerging technology.

    In this context, MetaWealth is expanding its strategy beyond real estate, focusing on real assets with an institutional profile. The company insists that this stage is supported by the platform’s evolution towards regulated capital market instruments, but also towards investments backed by private financing receivables.

    First investment: 22 million euros

    MetaWealth’s first investment in the BESS area is valued at 22 million euros and targets a total capacity of 130 MWh, structured as follows:

    • 100 MWh – autonomous battery system in Dumbrava, Neamț County, located close to existing grid infrastructure and renewable generation capacities;
    • 30 MWh – co-located storage units to be installed in several locations connected to the existing electricity grid.

    According to the company, the first 30 MWh are expected to become operational in Q3 2026, and the entire 130 MWh capacity is expected to be commissioned by Q4 2026.

    650 MWh under development

    MetaWealth states that the initial projects form the basis of a long-term strategy to build a Romanian energy storage platform. The company plans to develop approximately 650 MWh of additional capacity in several locations, with an aggregate investment plan of 110 million euros.

    Launched in 2023, MetaWealth has expanded into several European markets, increased its assets under management, and introduced regulated investment structures, including ISIN-coded listed bonds issued by Luxembourg securitization vehicles. The platform serves over 1,400 investors in 28 countries.
