Funds allocated to ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance) investments have increased over the past three years to $2.5 trillion, up from less than $1 trillion in 2019, Călin Meteș, Deputy Portfolio Manager of the Property Fund, said at the Gala where the energy industry celebrated the winners of the 10th Energynomics Awards.

“ESG has become a mainstream issue. Until a few years ago, investors looked at it superficially, but now ESG is on the investor agenda and the numbers prove it. We are seeing a huge increase in the amount of money that investors are allocating to ESG. In 2019, the total ESG funding was under 1 trillion dollars, and halfway through this year we have 2.5 trillion dollars,” Meteș said.

He added that statistics show that firms paying attention to ESG requirements performed more than three times better than firms not interested in this area, i.e. 32% versus 10%.

At the same time, capital flows into funds investing in ESG-compliant companies in the first half of 2022 amounted to 120 billion dollars, as the financial market went through an “extremely tumultuous” period with outflows of 140 billion dollars.

“In other words, even though some money went out of the market, investors still had the confidence to invest in funds that met these criteria,” Meteș said.
