Hidroelectrica is investing approximately 297 million lei in a new battery storage project, a project financed with over 43 million lei from the Modernization Fund.
“Hidroelectrica is strengthening its development strategy by investing in technologies that support the efficiency, flexibility and resilience of the energy system. Thus, the company has awarded the contract “Battery storage facility at C.H.E. Porțile de Fier II” to the bidder Synergy Construct, which will collaborate with the following subcontractors/third parties: Kseo Enerji Anonim Sirketi, Professional Land Survey, Zoork, Tripol Sistem Construct, Inemko Insaat Elektrik Telekominikasyon Sanayi Ve Ticaret Limited Sirketi, Rogotehnic, following the completion of all procedural steps of public procurement”, the company claims.
The BESS Porțile de Fier II project, an investment with a contracted value of 296.8 million lei, will have an installed power of 64 MW and a storage capacity of 434.76 MWh, becoming the largest battery storage capacity in Hidroelectrica’s portfolio.
The investment marks an important stage in the company’s evolution towards an energy model in which renewable energy production is complemented by the ability to store, manage and use energy according to the dynamics of the system and the consumption needs.
“For Hidroelectrica, the energy transition means more than developing new production capacities. It means building the infrastructure that allows us to efficiently capitalize on renewable energy and flexibly respond to the needs of the National Power System. The BESS Porțile de Fier II project is a strategic step in this direction and confirms Hidroelectrica’s commitment to investing in technologies that will define the energy of tomorrow”, declared Iulius-Dan Plaveti, CEO of Hidroelectrica.
The storage capacities will allow optimizing the production profile throughout the 24 hours, shifting energy towards higher value intervals and increasing the flexibility of the entire portfolio.
“Our strategy is not just about adding new production capacities, but building a balanced, flexible and resilient portfolio. Storage capacities give us the opportunity to optimize the production profile throughout the 24 hours, to shift energy towards high-value intervals and to better respond to hydrological and market conditions. In this way, we build the premises for sustainable profitability and sustainable development of the company”, added Iulius-Dan Plaveti.
For Hidroelectrica, energy storage naturally complements the expertise accumulated in the exploitation of hydropower resources. If water gives the company the ability to produce renewable energy, battery technology adds a new dimension to this capacity: energy can be stored for the moment when the system needs it most.
The project benefits from a financing of 43.4 million lei through the Modernization Fund, within the program “Supporting investments in the development of electricity storage capacities (batteries)”, run by the Ministry of Energy.
By attracting this financing and making the investment, Hidroelectrica contributes to the development of Romania’s modern energy infrastructure and to creating the premises for a more efficient use of renewable energy.
“A modern energy company must look beyond energy production and develop the entire value chain – production, flexibility, storage and system integration. The investment at Porțile de Fier II is the expression of this vision and represents an important step in transforming Hidroelectrica into a flexible and resilient energy portfolio”, stated Iulius-Dan Plaveti.
The development of the BESS Porțile de Fier II project is part of Hidroelectrica’s strategic direction of modernizing and diversifying the energy infrastructure and adapting to new market conditions.
