Hidroelectrica has received the commissioning of the installations related to hydroaggregate number 2 (HA2) of the Tismana Underground hydroelectric power plant. The works – part of a multi-objective contract with a total value of 20.8 million lei – were carried out by Electromontaj – Craiova Branch. The investment concerned HA2 automation and control installations, auxiliary installations, 0.4 kV AC power supply and distribution installations, etc.

CHE Tismana Subteran is the largest hydropower unit within the Cerna-Motru-Tismana Hydropower Complex. The power plant uses water from the Motru reservoir, which has a useful volume of 3.5 million cubic metres (m3) via an 8,580 m long penstock, and from the Clocotis lake, with a useful volume of 1.8 million m3 and an 11,450 m long gallery. The Tismana Underground Hydroelectric Power Plant is equipped with two Francis vertical-shaft hydro turbine generators with metal spiral chamber coupled with two generators with an installed capacity of 53 MW each. The average annual electricity production is 262 GWh. The turbine flow is discharged into the downstream Tismana Lake through a 4,405 m long escape tunnel.

The modernization and rehabilitation of equipment aims to implement state-of-the-art technological solutions, said Bogdan Badea, chairman of Hidroelectrica’s board of directors. “We are interested in introducing automation where possible, so that our objectives can be operated with as little human intervention as possible,” Bogdan Badea added, according to a press release.

Hidroelectrica operates 182 hydropower plants and five pumping stations, with a total installed power generation capacity of 6.3 GW. To these must be added the Crucea wind farm, with an installed capacity of 108 MW.
