Coal production fell by 25.7% in the first half of 2021

Romania’s net coal production totaled, in the first half of this year, 1.287 million tons of oil equivalent, being 25.7% (263,000 toe) higher than in the similar period of 2020, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

During the mentioned period, Romania imported 161,600 toe of net coal, with 14,500 toe (9.9%) more than the quantity imported in the similar period of the previous year.

The National Commission for Strategy and Forecast estimates for this year a coal production of 3.020 million toe, increasing by 9.9% compared to 2020, and imports of 370,000 toe, decreasing by 12.1%. For 2022, CNSP forecasts a production of 2.935 million toe, down 2.8%, and imports of 270,000 toe, down 27%, according to Agerpres.

According to the National Energy Strategy, total coal production will decrease from 32 TWh in 2030 to 12 TWh in 2050, following the downward trend of coal in the energy mix (45 TWh in 2020).

For 2030, the modeling results in the chosen Optimal Scenario show that the energy produced from coal will register a slight decrease, to 15.8 TWh, and will have a share of 20.6%.
