Volatility will continue to define the energy sector in 2026, says Cristian Hubati, OMV Petrom

The word that has defined the energy market in recent years, and that applies this year as well as in the years to come, is ‘volatility,’” said Cristian Hubati, member of the OMV Petrom Directorate, at the opening of the 13th edition of Spring Cocktail, an event organized by Energynomics.

“If there is one word that continues to define the energy sector in recent years, it is volatility. The past years have reminded us how crucial adaptability, resilience, and disciplined execution are. Looking at 2026, we see challenges, but also opportunities and progress. Perhaps the most important lesson for our industry is this: while we cannot control geopolitical events or global markets, we can control how we respond to them”, Hubati stated.

He emphasized that the war in Ukraine, geopolitical developments, and recent tensions in the Middle East have highlighted the close link between global stability and energy markets.

In 2026, volatility will not disappear, but the energy industry has the capacity to adapt, Hubati said. He pointed out that OMV Petrom will reach record levels in its investment program, particularly through the development of the Neptune Deep project in the Black Sea, one of the largest gas projects in Europe. The project involves mobilizing around 50 vessels and installing 160 kilometers of offshore pipelines, with the production platform set to be installed in Romania, and the first gas expected to flow in 2027.

The economic impact of the project is estimated at around €20 billion in revenues for the state budget and will contribute to regional energy security. At the same time, onshore resources remain an important part of the energy mix, with OMV Petrom recently reaching an agreement with the government to extend onshore licenses.

Hubati emphasized that the main lesson for the industry is that, although geopolitical events or global markets cannot be controlled, how companies respond determines their success. For OMV Petrom, this means capital discipline, safe operations, and responsible investments, ensuring a stable and secure flow of energy for Romania.
