Vienna Energy Forța Naturală, part of Austrian electricity and natural gas provider Wien Energie Group, has awarded a 25 million euro engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the development of a 45 MWp photovoltaic (PV) park in Romania.

The project for the solar power plant located in the central commune of Sâncel, Alba County, has been submitted for financing through the Modernization Fund, according to Seenews.

“Vienna Energy Forța Naturală SRL, a subsidiary of Wien Energie and a leader in the energy market in Vienna, is consolidating its presence in the renewable energy sector in Romania. We have started a large-scale program to develop photovoltaic projects and energy storage batteries using internal resources. The investments will be made from our own funds, through capital contributions or loans from the parent company. Currently, we have a portfolio of 350 MW in photovoltaic projects that are either at RTB or in advanced stages,” Dan Prodan, CEO of Vienna Energy, previously told Energynomics.

“Some time ago we obtained the construction permit for a 45 MW photovoltaic park, with three other projects in the same area, totaling 100 MW, to enter into execution. At the same time, we are in an advanced phase with the largest project of 107 MW, with the RTB deadline in the fall of 2025.

This year (2025), we will launch public tenders for contracting full EPC services for the 150 MW of photovoltaic projects in the same area,” Dan Prodan told us.

“I believe that Romania has a significant opportunity to strengthen its economic and energy role in the region. However, this depends on our ability to implement rapid reforms, attract strategic investments and apply an efficient energy strategy. If we manage to manage these challenges with vision and efficiency, we can ensure sustainable economic development and a competitive position in the European energy market.

Energy must not only be green, but also accessible and predictable, so as to support the development of industry and agriculture and generate added value in the economy. A well-thought-out energy policy must ensure security of supply, competitive costs and a modernized infrastructure, essential elements for GDP growth and strengthening Romania’s position in Europe.

If we do not act quickly and strategically, we risk losing ground to other economies in the region, which are already advancing in the energy transition process and attracting major investments. This could lead to a prolonged dependence on polluting and expensive energy sources, affecting economic competitiveness and slowing down progress towards a sustainable development model.

However, Romania has all the prerequisites to succeed: a diversified energy mix, high potential in the renewable sector and access to European financing. Through a strategic approach and correctly targeted investments, we can ensure not only energy stability, but also solid economic growth, aligned with the objectives of competitiveness and long-term sustainability”, Dan Prodan also said, in an interview conducted by Energynomics Magazine in 2025.
