Since 2004, OMV Petrom has contributed over 48 billion euros to the Romanian state budget through taxes and dividends and, equally important, in the same period we have invested more than 21 billion euros in Romania and have also allocated 210 million euros to support communities through education, health, environmental protection and local development initiatives, claims Christina Verchere, CEO, OMV Petrom.
“Over the past 25 years, OMV Petrom has undergone a profound transformation and evolved from a predominantly local oil and gas company into a leading regional energy company and a reliable energy provider for Romania. Today, we supply approximately one third of the country’s fuel and natural gas needs and contribute approximately 10% to Romania’s electricity production. Throughout this period, we have navigated many, many different things: changing markets, economic cycles and major industry challenges, while continuing to invest, modernize and strengthen our business. The company was listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange on September 3, 2001 and, by the end of that year, our market capitalization was approximately 1.6 billion lei, and today we are at almost 75 billion lei (…) I believe we have investors who have been part of this journey for 25 years and I thank them for staying with us.” us”, emphasized Verchere.
In the opinion of the head of OMV Petrom, this value created “actually goes far beyond market capitalization”.
“Since 2004, OMV Petrom has contributed over 48 billion euros to the Romanian state budget through taxes and dividends and, equally importantly, in the same period we have invested more than 21 billion euros in Romania and have also allocated 210 million euros to support communities through education, health, environmental protection and local development initiatives. I am a strong supporter of the idea that a company is part of society. We are part of the product supply. This is what we do. In our case, it is energy (…) The Bucharest Stock Exchange has played a very important role in this journey. Capital markets support economic growth by helping companies access financing to invest and grow, while promoting transparency, responsibility and sound corporate governance”, appreciated Christina Verchere.
In terms of investments, the oil group’s representative mentioned the Neptun Deep project, aimed at strengthening energy security in the region.
“We are investing in projects that will shape Romania’s energy future. Most notably, of course, the Neptun Deep Project, which is the largest natural gas project in the European Union. Alongside this, we are also investing in sustainable fuels, renewable energy and other low-carbon energy solutions. These projects are designed to strengthen energy security, support economic development and also create long-term value. And our ambition remains clear: to create long-term value for our shareholders, while contributing to Romania’s economy and energy future. As we celebrate this anniversary, we also celebrate the role of the Bucharest Stock Exchange in supporting Romanian companies, attracting investment and building confidence in Romania’s future. We are very proud of what we have achieved together over the past 25 years. And, most importantly, we look forward to continuing this journey in the years to come and look forward with confidence to the next 25 years,” Verchere pointed out.
OMV Petrom is the largest integrated energy producer in Southeastern Europe and represents, today, an anchor of economic stability for Romania, stated the president of the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB), Radu Hanga.
“25 years ago, on September 3, 2001, Petrom, at that time the largest company in Romania, listed its shares on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. Today, the company is the largest integrated energy producer in South-Eastern Europe and represents an anchor of economic stability for our entire country (…) In 2001, the total market capitalization on the main market of the Bucharest Stock Exchange was 3.8 billion lei. Now we are at 7.08 billion, an increase of 136 times. In 2001, if we look at the average daily turnover on the main market for shares, we had something like 1.5 million. Now, this year, we are at 122 million, that is 80 times more than 20 years ago. Regarding the total value traded on the main market, if in 2001 we were at 381 million lei, now we are at approximately 20 billion, 50 times more”, said Hanga, quoted by Agerpres.
According to the BVB official, regarding the number of transactions, it started in 2001, from 357,000 such operations per year, and currently their volume has exceeded the threshold of 1.6 million. “And, probably, we will end this year at approximately 2.5 million transactions, which means that we will have a new historical maximum at the Bucharest Stock Exchange. The previous maximum was in 2024, with 1.9 million transactions”, added the BVB president.
Regarding Petrom’s listing on the local capital market, if in 2002, the company’s capitalization was 1.6 billion lei, currently the value of this indicator has reached 75 billion lei, 50 times more.
“We must say that the listing of Petrom, in 2001, together with the listing of BRD, almost quadrupled the total market capitalization of the stock exchange. And again, speaking of Petrom, since the first trading session on September 3, investors have executed almost 2.3 million transactions with Petrom shares, approximately 61 billion. We can say that Petrom has been one of the most active symbols of the growth of the Bucharest Stock Exchange. The figure that says the most about Petrom’s impact on the Romanian market is the number of investors and if we look at it from this perspective, we can say that almost half a million Romanians are direct investors in Petrom shares. If we add the pension funds, where we have 8.5 million Romanians saving money, we can say that half of the Romanian population is somehow linked to Petrom as shareholders. This means a financial connection and it means that when OMV Petrom does well, Romania also does well, which means, literally, a positive impact on the balance sheets of 8.59 million Romanians”, pointed out Radu Hanga.
