Rompetrol Rafinare continues in 2026 the strategic program to modernize the storage infrastructure in Petromidia, through the capital rehabilitation and modernization of five tanks with a direct impact on the operational flexibility of the refinery, the company announced.
The projects, which are in different stages of execution, are part of a multi-year investment program aimed at strengthening operational safety, ensuring the efficiency of operational flows and maintaining the facilities at the highest performance standards.
“Rompetrol Rafinare focuses on critical storage infrastructure, by ensuring a high degree of operational reliability, reducing maintenance costs and extending the life of the equipment. The new tanks and associated systems are designed in accordance with the latest industrial safety and environmental protection standards. At the same time, the program will also bring a 20% increase in storage capacity for raw materials and petroleum products,” said Sorin Graure, General Manager of Rompetrol Rafinare.
A completed project aimed at rebuilding a distillate tank, a necessary component in obtaining diesel fuel. The tank went through a complete program of measurements and technical expertise, followed by the dismantling of the old structure and the construction of a new tank, equipped with all the systems and safety elements necessary for operation in optimal conditions. At the same time, its capacity was increased from 5,000 m³ to 6,000 m³.
Similarly, the capacity of a gasoline tank will be increased from 5,000 m³ to 6,000 m³, and two other units for storing diesel and components will increase from 10,000 m³ to 12,000 m³. At the same time, a crude oil tank with a capacity of 57,000 m³ is being modernized.
An innovative element used in these projects is the use of hydraulic jacks, which allow the tank to be built starting from the lid and the upper ring. This method significantly reduces the risks associated with working at height and speeds up the execution stages, contributing to a safer and more efficient process.
Each project involves the mobilization of approximately 100 specialists – designers, engineers, execution teams, the refinery’s own personnel and subcontractors from companies with extensive expertise in the field.
From 2007 to the present, in the two refineries operated by Rompetrol Rafinare, Petromidia Năvodari and Vega Ploiești, over 60 tanks have been rehabilitated and modernized.
The Petromidia refinery, one of the most modern and efficient in the region, processed almost 2.6 million tons of raw materials in the first half of 2026, resulting in a production of about 2.1 million tons of fuels. Almost 70% of the petroleum products obtained were directed to the domestic market.
The Vega refinery, the only refinery in Romania specialized in special products (bitumen, hexane, ecological solvents), processed almost 164 thousand tons of raw materials in the first half of 2026, recording a record in bitumen production – 48.7 thousand tons.
The significant shareholders of Rompetrol Rafinare SA are KMG International (54.63% – directly and indirectly) and the Romanian State, through the Ministry of Energy (44.7%).
