With the growing share of renewable energy sources in European grids, the need for systems that ensure stability and flexibility of transmission and distribution networks is also increasing. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are key tools for managing balance, deviations, and maximizing returns from renewables.
Sungrow, a global leader in solar and storage technologies, introduces advanced systems to the European market: PowerStack 200CS (for C&I segment) and PowerTitan 2.0 (for utility-scale projects). Both systems meet the highest technical and safety standards and are ready for a wide range of applications—from FCR (Frequency Containment Reserve), storing PV surpluses, to spot market trading.
The Importance of EMS for Efficient BESS Operation
Every battery system in real operation requires an Energy Management System (EMS) to ensure comprehensive management, optimization, and communication with the supervisory system (e.g., SCADA or flexibility aggregator). EMS is the brain of the system—it controls energy flows, monitors limits (e.g., SOC, SOH), responds to market signals, and ensures protective functions.
Sungrow systems offer open interfaces for third-party EMS integration, typically selected by EPCs or aggregators based on specific use cases. Communication uses standard protocols like Modbus TCP, IEC 61850, or SunSpec, with extensive data sets available via REST API and MQTT. This approach offers full flexibility for integration into hybrid PV/BESS projects or aggregated FCR/trading portfolios.
Cybersecurity – Sungrow Sets New Standards
Given the connection of energy storage systems to internet infrastructure, cybersecurity is a key aspect of ESS design and operation. Sungrow actively invests in security features and is the first renewable energy manufacturer to obtain ETSI EN 303 645 certification—the strictest European cybersecurity standard for networked devices.
Sungrow also complies with the new EU RED 2022/30 directive and EN 18031-1 and EN 18031-2 standards. Independent TÜV SÜD tests confirmed that Sungrow’s COM100 communication units passed secure authentication, encrypted communication, brute-force protection, and software update integrity tests.
Tested security mechanisms include:
- Access and authentication systems (passwords, verification, credential changes)
- Secure update mechanisms
- Encrypted communication and data storage
- Replay attack protection
- Network activity detection and traffic control
These measures make Sungrow systems ready for deployment in any project.
PowerStack – 2h and 4h Modular Systems for C&I Segment
PowerStack is ideal for commercial and industrial buildings. The 2-hour (0.5C) and 4-hour (0.25C) versions allow scalable power and capacity. Key technical features include:
- Fully integrated solution: lithium batteries, PCS, BMS, LCS, and control unit in one IP55-rated cabinet
- Liquid cooling with active temperature control for long battery life and stable performance
- Plug & Play installation, ideal for quick deployment
- Parallel configuration possible for projects from 225 kWh to 5 MWh
Typical applications:
- Peak shaving + reduced reserved capacity
- Time-shifting (charging from PV, discharging during high spot prices)
- FCR support (grid balancing services)
- Energy arbitrage (trading based on electricity price differences)

PowerTitan 2.0 – Robust Solution for Utility and Gigawatt-Scale Installations
PowerTitan 2.0 is a containerized system for large utility applications. Each 20-foot container integrates 5,015 kWh capacity with up to 2.5 MW power. The standardized AC block solution starts at 10 MWh and 5 MW, including a transformer station for medium-voltage connection, enabling easy scaling to gigawatt-hours.
Technical innovations:
- Liquid-cooled battery system with extreme cell density – 5 MWh in a 20-foot container
- Decentralized PCS: if one of the 12 inverters fails, power drops by only 8%
- Integrated AC-DC design: reduces footprint by 10–30%, failure losses by 92%, increases RTE by 2%, and halves commercial operation time
- Multi-dimensional safety design: four-level overcurrent protection, unique ArcDefender DC technology
- Grid support under all conditions, improving stability

Proven in Practice – Installations and Safety
Sungrow has installed over 70 GWh of BESS projects globally, including over 9 GWh in Europe. Notable PowerTitan 2.0 installations include:
- Saudi Arabia – 7.8 GWh with ACWA Power (world’s largest BESS project) – under construction
- Germany – Nofar Energy 230 MWh Stendal Energy Storage Project – under construction
- UK – BW ESS 330 MWh Bramley project – operational since February 2025

Proven Safety – PowerTitan 2.0 Burn Test
At the end of 2024, a large-scale test of PowerTitan 2.0 was conducted under DNV supervision. The goal was to verify that fire in an extreme failure scenario would not spread to nearby containers. Test results:
- Simulated ignition of one module, leading to full container A fire
- Neighboring containers B, C, and D remained unaffected, with temperatures below critical (max. 84°C)
- Explosion and pressure wave diverted via deflagration panels on top
- No damage to surrounding systems
- Toxic gas concentrations outside test zone below life-threatening levels
The test exceeded standard UL 9540A methodology, confirming PowerTitan 2.0’s suitability for tight spaces near residential or critical infrastructure.

Modern energy storage systems are not just “batteries for photovoltaics”, but sophisticated technologies that enable:
- Balancing renewable generation (solar, wind)
- Storing surpluses for time-shifting and spot market arbitrage
- Providing FCR and other services (FCR, aFRR, mFRR)
- Backup for microgrids and island operation
- Hybrid PV + BESS + diesel/gas generators in remote areas
Combined with smart EMS and growing flexibility in European markets, ESS becomes an economic and strategic tool.
