Slovakia will sign a nuclear energy cooperation agreement with the United States, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Saturday, as the country moves towards building a new nuclear power plant with US help, Reuters reports, according to Agerpres.

Slovakia, which currently has five nuclear reactors at two nuclear power plants, has been in talks with Washington since last year to build a new reactor with US group Westinghouse.

Fico said on Saturday that the new unit would have a capacity of almost 1,200 megawatts (MW), larger than the existing units.

“In cooperation with American partners, we want to build a new unit, which will be exclusively state-owned, on the site of the current Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant,” the Slovak prime minister said, without giving further details.

Fico also said he wanted to attend the signing of a general agreement on US-Slovak nuclear cooperation in Washington on Friday. The Slovak prime minister did not provide further details about what kind of documents would be signed.

In October, the Slovak government approved an intergovernmental agreement with the US to build a new unit, and in December Fico said that US President Donald Trump had invited him to the United States on the occasion of this year’s World Cup to sign a bilateral agreement on nuclear energy.

Slovakia currently produces 63% of its energy at two units at the Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power plant, 60 kilometres northeast of Bratislava, and three units at the Mohovce plant in the southwest of the country, all of which are Soviet-built. The new, much more powerful reactor is expected to be operational in about 15 years.
