SANY International has acquired a 153 MW battery energy storage project in Borzești, Romania.

The transaction involved the full acquisition of Spark Terminal SRL—the developer of an independent battery energy storage system (BESS) project with an installed capacity of 153 MW, located in the Borzești area of Romania—from RNV Infrastructure SRL, part of the Renovatio Group, according to a statement by EY-Parthenon.

This transaction strengthens SANY’s growing presence in the Romanian renewable energy market. Through its renewable energy operations, SANY continues to expand its investment portfolio with assets that support the energy transition, while simultaneously contributing to the development of large-scale energy storage infrastructure in Romania.

The SANY Group previously announced that it would invest 1 billion euros in Romania. As one of Asia’s major industrial conglomerates, SANY launched its local operations this spring through a series of projects in the renewable energy and storage sectors.

The first announced project will be developed in the commune of Dobrești, Dolj County, and consists of a 95 MWp photovoltaic park integrated with 218 MWh of battery storage capacity. The investment is now ready for the execution phase.

The Asian group’s entry into the Romanian market comes at a time when the need for storage capacity is growing rapidly, driven by the expansion of renewable energy production and the pressure to modernize the energy system.

Company representatives stated that Romania offers both favorable natural resources and opportunities for the rapid development of large-scale energy projects.

“We hope that, through this project, we will boost investments in green energy in Romania. We intend to invest in more projects of this kind—solar combined with energy storage, as well as standalone storage,” said Guo RuiGang, Executive Vice President of the SANY Group.

Dolj Becomes a Regional Hub for Green Energy

The choice of Dolj County is based on the region’s high solar potential and favorable access to energy infrastructure. The project in Dobrești is presented as the group’s first European venture to combine solar power generation with industrial-scale storage.

In addition to the initial investment, the company has announced the expansion of its partnership with Danube Solar to include three further standalone storage projects in the commune of Pielești. These will have a combined total capacity of 233.55 MWac and a storage capacity of 984.96 MWh.

Last year, the SANY Group reported a turnover of $12.49 billion and had approximately 90,000 employees. The group operates across four continents and is active in sectors such as solar energy, wind energy, energy storage, and hydrogen.
