The Swedish-based energy storage operator Repono AB has completed the acquisition of a 202 MW / 404 MWh (2.0 h) standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Argeș county, marking one of the largest energy storage transactions in Southeast Europe to date.
The ready-to-build project, developed by a Bucharest-based renewable energy company, is already secured with a grid connection contract with Transelectrica at the 220 kV Pitești Substation, writes the company press release. Once commissioned, it will stand among the most significant grid-scale storage assets in the region, capable of storing and releasing enough electricity to power more than 120,000 households during peak demand periods.
The acquisition forms part of a broader partnership with local developers to deliver up to 1.4 GW of battery storage capacity across Romania in the coming years — a move that reinforces Repono AB’s long-term strategic commitment to the Romanian energy transition and to strengthening the flexibility of national and regional power systems.
Market operations for the Argeș project will be managed by Gunvor, in collaboration with Enspired, the Vienna-based optimiser, ensuring efficient trading and balancing participation in the Romanian and European power markets.
“This transaction represents an important milestone for Repono AB and demonstrates our continued commitment to developing large-scale storage infrastructure that supports Europe’s energy transition,” said Karim Nils Grueber, CEO of Repono AB. “With this project, InnoEnergy’s aim to achieve carbon neutrality is further fortified. Large-scale storage assets like Argeș are key enablers of a stable and decarbonized European power system,” added Harmen de Kool, Chairman of the Board of Repono AB, representing InnoEnergy, a leading clean tech impact investor.
This acquisition further expands Repono’s pan-European BESS portfolio, with active developments across Germany, Romania, Italy, Austria, and Poland, consolidating its position as a leading independent energy storage platform driving the continent’s renewable transformation.
