PPC Group continues to invest in the critical area of electricity storage, starting the construction of a new Battery Electrochemical Storage (BESS) Station in Amyntaio, in the area of the Amyntaio thermal power plant.
The new station will be built by PPC Renewables, a member company of the PPC Group, and will integrate batteries with a total installed capacity of 50 MW. The storage capacity will be 200 MWh. Upon completion of the project, the station will be able to supply the energy system with a capacity of 50 MW for 4 hours.
The new BESS station will use innovative LFP batteries, liquid-cooled, maximizing both efficiency and safety during operation.
Construction of the new storage station has started while construction works on two more electrochemical storage stations are in full swing. The two plants, with a total installed capacity of 98MW and a storage capacity of 196MWh, are located in Western Macedonia, in the areas of the Kardia and Meliti thermal power plants.

Such investments will ensure the optimal use of renewable energy generation and, moreover, the stability of the electricity grid in our country, as well as the entire European continent. PPC Group is a pioneer in this field, as our investment plan includes significant investments in energy storage systems,” said Konstantinos Mavros, Deputy CEO for RES at PPC Group.
The role of electricity storage units is essential as they aim to support the operation of nearby photovoltaic plants and contribute to the stability of the electricity grid, optimizing the management of renewable energy and maximizing the potential for electricity generation from renewable sources.
In the same context, PPC Group also announced that it will build 860 MW of electricity storage projects in the region of Western Macedonia, in northern Greece. In total, these projects will create over 1,300 jobs during the construction phase and hundreds during operation.
Among the PPC Group’s storage projects, two pumped storage projects, often referred to as “natural batteries” that use two reservoirs located at different altitudes, stand out. These include the Kardia mine project, with a capacity to supply 320 MW for 8 hours, and the South Field mine project, with a capacity to supply 240 MW for 12 hours. For both projects, the permitting process has already been completed.
In addition to the storage projects implemented in Greece, a BESS unit is also under construction in Bulgaria, with a nominal power of 25 MW and a storage capacity of 55 MWh.
