Transelectrica has officially launched work on two of Romania’s most important energy investments of the last decade – the 400 kV overhead power lines Gădălin-Suceava and Suceava-Balti. These will close the 400 kV ring in the north of the country and strengthen the interconnection with the Republic of Moldova, making a decisive contribution to the region’s energy security.
“These are two large-scale works with a historic impact,” said Ștefăniță Munteanu, CEO of Transelectrica. “The closure of the 400 kV ring in the northern area and the new interconnection with the Republic of Moldova […] create the prerequisites for the economic development of the entire north-eastern part of the country.”
Gădălin – Suceava: the longest overhead power line in Romania
The contract for the design and execution of the 400 kV Gădălin-Suceava line was signed in August 2025, with Electromontaj SA – ELM Electromontaj Cluj SA, Electromontaj SA leader. The value of the contract is 688.3 million lei (excluding VAT), partially financed from the Modernization Fund, with an execution period of 69 months, starting from September 2025.
The works are complex and involve crossing the Carpathian Mountains over a distance of 260 kilometers, covering three counties – Cluj, Bistrița-Năsăud and Suceava – and 40 localities. The new line will connect Transylvania with Moldova, providing an alternative route for transporting electricity between Romania’s western and eastern regions.
The project will facilitate the evacuation of energy from planned wind and solar power plants in Moldova and Dobrogea, contributing to balancing energy flows in the National Power System and increasing grid resilience. Completion is scheduled for 2030.
Suceava – Balti: a strategic interconnection with the Republic of Moldova
The 400 kV Suceava-Balti overhead power line will extend the national energy infrastructure eastward, adding Botoșani county to the electric transmission grid map for the first time. The contract, signed in March 2025, is worth 133.4 million lei (excluding VAT) and is being carried out by the same association led by Electromontaj SA. The execution period is 52 months, starting in April 2025 and estimated completion in 2028.
The new line will be about 93 kilometers long, with 302 high-voltage poles, crossing 17 localities in Suceava and Botoșani counties. It will complete the strategic axis Gădălin-Suceava-Bălți, creating a veritable energy bridge between Transylvania, Moldova and the Republic of Moldova.
In parallel, Transelectrica and Delgaz Grid are planning to build a 400/110 kV substation in Botoșani, which will connect the county to the electricity transmission grid and open new opportunities for industrial and renewable investments.
The Suceava-Balti project is of particular strategic importance: it will integrate the Republic of Moldova into the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), facilitating cross-border exchanges and creating the conditions for a common energy market.
