Leroy Merlin announced that it is reducing energy consumption in stores and, in parallel, continues investments in renewable energy production.
“Currently, 12 stores in the national network are equipped with photovoltaic systems installed on a total area of over 63,000 square meters. Each unit has, on average, approximately 1,000 photovoltaic panels, which provide between 20% and 30% of the store’s energy needs,” say company officials.
Currently, 83% of Leroy Merlin stores have implemented optimized programs for lighting outdoor totems (the Leroy Merlin logo located outside the stores), and 81% reduce parking lot lighting to a maximum of 50% of capacity outside of operating hours. The percentages reflect the current stage of implementation, with the company taking the necessary actions to extend these measures to the entire network. At the same time, all stores use intelligent building management systems (BMS), which maintain the temperature in the optimal range of 20–23°C and contribute to the efficient use of energy, the company also announced.
“In the current context, we believe that responsibility begins with our own operations. Therefore, we continue to implement measures that reduce energy consumption in Leroy Merlin stores, without affecting the customer experience. At the same time, we want to support Romanians in making efficient choices for their homes, offering them solutions that help them reduce both energy consumption and long-term costs. We believe that every gesture counts, and through concrete measures and products adapted to current needs, we can contribute together to more responsible consumption,” says Mihaela Voinea, Sustainable Development Leader Leroy Merlin Romania.
At the store level, the company has also tested a series of additional energy efficiency measures, adapted to the specifics of each location, with the solutions that have proven their efficiency to be gradually extended to the entire network.
Thus, in the Ploiești store, motion sensors for the lighting system were installed in certain spaces with low traffic. Also here, during periods of abundant natural light, artificial lighting can be reduced by up to 70% of capacity.
In Constanța, shading nets were installed to limit the heating of the spaces during the summer and reduce the need for air conditioning, while in Târgu Mureș the lighting is automatically turned off by the BMS system at 9:20 p.m. In the Craiova Electroputere store, the air conditioning system schedule was optimized so that it only operates between 12:00 and 9:00 p.m.
In parallel, Leroy Merlin continues to invest in the production of renewable energy. These include solar panels and boilers, heat pumps, inverters and batteries for energy storage, as well as LED bulbs, thermostats and smart switches, which allow monitoring and optimizing energy consumption in the home. For situations where the power supply may be temporarily interrupted, the retailer also offers solutions such as flashlights or solar lamps, useful for both households and outdoor activities.
