Romania’s energy production fell by 2.9% in the first five months of this year, compared to the same period in 2025, while final electricity consumption decreased by 3.4%, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to official statistics, between January 1 and May 31, 2026, primary energy resources decreased by 4.5%, and electricity resources increased by 1.4%, compared to the same period the previous year, according to Agerpres.

The main primary energy resources, during the mentioned period, totaled 12.927 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), down by 609,500 toe compared to the period from January 1 to May 31, 2025.

Domestic production amounted to 6.704 million toe, down by 202,800 toe (-2.9%), compared to the same period in 2025, and imports were 6.222 million toe, down by 406,700 thousand toe (-6.1%).

During this period, electricity resources stood at 29.207 billion kWh, up by 389.5 million kWh, year-on-year.

According to the cited source, production from thermal power plants was 6.683 billion kWh, down by 310.3 million kWh (-4.4%), while production from hydroelectric power plants amounted to 6.376 billion kWh (+23.2%), and that from nuclear power plants to 4.037 billion kWh (-12.3%).

Production from wind power plants, in the first five months of the year, was 3.018 billion kWh, up by 402.2 million kWh compared to the same period in 2025, and solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations amounted to 2.212 billion kWh, up by 584.3 million kWh.

The final consumption of electricity, in the specified period, was 20.208 billion kWh, 3.4% lower than the same period last year, the final consumption of electricity in the economy decreased by 0.8%, public lighting decreased by 5.2%, while population consumption decreased by 11.3%.

INS data reveal that, compared to the reference period, the export of electricity was 6.473 billion kWh, an increase of 749.9 million kWh.
