FomCo Solar and Dunext Romania will showcase a 20 MWh energy storage system integrated with the photovoltaic park at Chirileu, Mureș County, on 24 July. The technical visit is part of Energy Storage Open Day 2026, an event dedicated to commercial, industrial and utility-scale battery applications.
The project illustrates the transition of photovoltaic parks from simple power generation facilities to hybrid assets capable of managing more flexibly when electricity is delivered to the grid. Storage can limit exposure to periods of low or negative prices and open access to revenues from energy arbitrage and ancillary services, depending on the technical configuration and market participation requirements.
The solution installed at Chirileu has a storage capacity of 20 MWh and is connected to a photovoltaic park with an installed capacity of approximately 6 MW, owned by FomCo Solar.
The proposed model combines the use of the battery for balancing with capturing price spreads between different periods of the day. Its economic viability nevertheless depends on the operating strategy, access to the relevant markets, imbalance costs, battery degradation and the operator’s ability to adapt charging and discharging cycles to market conditions.
From technical configuration to capturing energy value
Energy Storage Open Day 2026 will bring together approximately 80-100 renewable energy developers, investors, designers, integrators, EPC contractors and other industry professionals, according to the organisers.
The technical conference, scheduled to take place at the Imperial Inn Hotel in Târgu Mureș, will cover BESS configurations for commercial, industrial and utility-scale applications, case studies and models for optimising stored energy. Participants will then travel to Chirileu to see how the batteries have been integrated into the photovoltaic park’s infrastructure and discuss the project with the teams involved.
“An energy storage system is not merely a piece of equipment that is delivered, but a solution that must operate properly and generate value over the long term,” said Marius Varga, Country Manager for Dunext Romania and the Republic of Moldova. He identified configuration, commissioning, and technical support during operation as key components necessary for successful implementation and long-term operation.
The program begins at 2:00 p.m., and the technical tour is scheduled for 4:35 p.m. to 6:10 p.m. Participation is by invitation only and requires prior confirmation.
