The year 2023 was characterised by investments in power generation and the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) granted establishment permits for 144 new electricity generation capacities, totalling almost 3,000 MW.

“This year has also been a complicated one for those in the energy sector. It has not been an easy year for distribution operators, suppliers […] or consumers. The word that defines 2023 is investment”, said George Niculescu, ANRE President, at the 11th Energynomics Awards Gala.

While in 2020, ANRE granted only four permits for new power generation projects, totalling 13 MW, a year later the number of permits has doubled and the targeted installed capacity has risen to 80 MW.

In 2022, ANRE granted 55 authorisations for 881 MW, and in 2023 it will approve 141 investments with a total installed capacity of 2,818 MW.

“These investments will soon be seen in the system,” Niculescu added.
