HELLENiQ ENERGY is accelerating its renewable energy expansion in Romania, planning to develop at least 500 MW of battery energy storage capacity over the next three years, thereby reinforcing its commitment to one of its key markets outside Greece.
Through its subsidiary, HELLENiQ Renewables Romania, the Group is developing a portfolio of hybrid solar and wind projects that incorporate battery storage systems, alongside standalone storage facilities. The planned investments will contribute to greater flexibility and stability within Romania’s energy system, supporting the integration of renewable energy and strengthening energy security.
As part of this strategy, the company is evaluating the addition of battery storage systems to existing, operational photovoltaic parks, with a potential combined capacity of 170 MW / 680 MWh. These investments are expected to enhance operational flexibility and improve the commercial performance of the renewable energy assets. “Integrating storage into our renewable energy projects is a key priority for our growth in Romania. In several instances, hybrid solutions have already helped us secure more favorable grid connection terms, regarding both costs and commissioning timelines. We are also evaluating investments in standalone battery storage systems, taking into account evolving market conditions,” stated Mihai Darie, Director of HELLENiQ Renewables Romania.
Expanding the renewable energy footprint in Romania
HELLENiQ ENERGY continues to strengthen its presence in Romania’s renewable energy sector by combining new operational assets with a growing portfolio of projects at various stages of development.
Following the commissioning of its first two photovoltaic parks in Teleorman and Olt counties—with a combined capacity of 58 MW—the Group inaugurated a third solar park (63 MW) in Giurgiu County in September, and a fourth park (currently 59 MW, with plans to expand to 90 MW) in Dolj County in October, bringing its total operational renewable energy capacity in Romania to 180 MW.
Meanwhile, construction work on the Ansthall wind farm (96 MW) in Galați County is progressing, with eight of the fifteen Vestas wind turbines already installed. The Group’s renewable energy project portfolio in Romania is estimated to reach approximately 850 MW, comprising solar, wind, and energy storage projects. Romania remains a strategic market for HELLENiQ ENERGY’s regional expansion, with investments aimed at developing a diversified and sustainable clean energy portfolio.
Energy storage: a core element of the Group’s regional strategy
The expansion into Romania builds upon HELLENiQ ENERGY’s broader investments in energy storage across Southeast Europe.
In Greece, the Group recently completed the construction of its first standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Thessaloniki industrial complex. With a capacity of 100 MW / 200 MWh, the project ranks among the largest battery storage installations developed in Southeast Europe.
Across Greece, Romania, Cyprus, and Bulgaria, HELLENiQ ENERGY’s portfolio of renewable energy and storage projects under development exceeds 6 GW, including over 1 GW of storage projects.
Under its “Vision 2030” strategy, the Group aims to achieve a renewable energy portfolio of over 1.5 GW by 2028 and 2 GW by 2030, supported by a balanced mix of solar, wind, and storage technologies. Through these investments, HELLENiQ ENERGY strengthens its position as a leading integrated energy group in Southeast Europe, contributing to the region’s energy transition, security of supply, and long-term energy resilience.
