Access to financing remains challenging for Romanian companies, but multiple funding options are available, provided businesses strengthen their corporate governance, says Ciprian Laduncă, member of the Board of Directors and independent non-executive director (INED) at Adrem.

“Financing is not easy to obtain, but a lot of options are being considered by companies,” he noted at the “International Approach London” conference, organized by Energynomics in London.

According to Laduncă, companies in Romania are increasingly exploring diverse funding sources, including initial public offerings (IPOs), particularly in the energy sector. At the same time, minority shareholders are entering businesses that were traditionally founded and controlled by families or groups of entrepreneurs. He underlined that good corporate governance is a decisive factor in attracting investment. Investors gain greater confidence when companies demonstrate transparency, accountability, and structured decision-making processes.

“With good governance, those who want to invest in a company feel more comfortable,” he explained.

However, implementing governance standards in non-listed companies remains a challenge. Laduncă pointed out that corporate governance is still a relatively new concept in Romania and, importantly, it is not mandatory for privately held firms. This limits the speed at which best practices are adopted across the broader business landscape. He expects market dynamics to accelerate change and as competition for capital intensifies, companies seeking funding will be compelled to improve governance standards in order to gain access to financial resources. “When entrepreneurs understand the benefits of good governance, financing, regardless of its type, will become easier to achieve,” Laduncă concluded.

The conference “International Approach London” was organized by Energynomics, with the support of the Embassy of Romania to the UK and the British Embassy in Romania, together with our partners: AJ BRAND, Electrica, Monsson, MyEnerji, Nofar Energy, Waldevar.
