Romania imported over 197,000 tons of crude oil from Azerbaijan in January, 7% more than in the same month last year, at a price almost 11% lower, according to Profit.ro.

According to data published by the Azerbaijani authorities, cited by local media, Romania’s crude oil imports increased by 6.8% in January compared to the same month in 2025, to 197,054 tons. The value of imports stood at 93.67 million dollars, down 10.6% compared to January 2025.

Romania was the second largest importer of Azerbaijani oil last month, but far behind Italy, the first place holder, with imports of almost 1.85 million tons, up 9.5% year-on-year. Italian refineries paid over $861.6 million in total for crude oil imported from Azerbaijan, a 7.6% decrease compared to January last year. Portugal is in third place, with imports of 93,590 tons (-56.7% vs. January 2025), worth $44.3 million.

Germany reduced its imports from Azerbaijan by 77.7% in January compared to the first month of last year, to 91,294 tons, for which it paid $44.25 million. In total, Azerbaijan’s oil exports reached 2.64 million tons in January, down 23.6% in terms of volume and almost 35% in terms of value, to $1.24 billion.

Romania imported 1.11 million tons of crude oil and petroleum products from Azerbaijan last year, worth almost $600 million, according to statistics published last month. Romania’s imports increased 1.5 times in volume and by almost 37% in value compared to 2024.
