GEN-I Sonce has started construction of the BESS Gheorgheni energy storage project, with a capacity of 55 MW / 220 MWh, following the signing of a full EPC contract with WALDEVAR Energy.

The new milestone moves the project from the permitting and preparation stage into the construction phase. According to GEN-I’s official announcement, the project has secured the land and grid connection rights, obtained the necessary permits and will use Tier 1 BESS equipment.

The current stage is different from the one announced at the end of June, when WALDEVAR had been contracted for the transformer substation of 110 kV / 63 MVA. GEN-I now confirms both the signing of the full EPC contract for the storage facility and the start of works on site.

The company has not yet disclosed the value of the EPC contract, the battery and PCS suppliers or the final financing structure. GEN-I does, however, state that the project has been designed to serve as a model for two other similar investments it is preparing.
