The first energy storage facility in Romania was inaugurated in Constanta on Thursday, September 27, by EDP Renewables. The storage system with a capacity of 1 MW was installed in the Cobadin 1 wind farm. By using it, excess energy produced from wind sources will be stored in lithium-based batteries and will be released according to demand.

The investment is a premiere not only for Romania, but also for the Portuguese group EDP. EDPR is also planning to build a secondary power station in solar parks in Romania.

“Through this project, we are contributing to the third revolution in the renewable energy sector,” said Duarte Belo, general manager of EDPR Europe and Brazil, at the launch ceremony. “The first was to improve wind capacity and increase competitiveness, twenty years ago, and the second was solar power, which, by recent cost cuts, is already changing the prospect of the renewable sector. The third one is just at the beginning, and this is storage”, the official explained.

EDP Renewables (Energias de Portugal) started its activity in Romania in 2008 by acquiring several wind projects. In 2013, the first photovoltaic park of EDP Renewables was put in operation. In 2018, EDP Renewables has a functional capacity of over 520 MW in wind parks and solar projects, according the company.
