The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a credit line of up to 25 million euro in loan to Constanța South Container Terminal (CSCT), owned by DP World, to support the electrification of operations at the Port of Constanța and accelerate its transition to a green port. The project will support the electrification of port infrastructure and terminal equipment.
The investment marks the participation of Constanța Municipality in the EBRD’s “Green Cities” programme.
The project will benefit from a non-refundable contribution of 19.8 million euros from the European Union, granted through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) and a non-refundable contribution of 7.5 million euro through the Transport Program 2021 – 2027, and the difference of 47.7 million euros will be provided from the company’s own funds.
The investment program, with a total value of 100 million euro, will allow the development of electrical infrastructure, namely distribution networks, electrical systems for powering ships ashore, electrical stations and auxiliary installations, as well as the acquisition of cranes and electric vehicles used in the operation of the terminal. The investment will contribute to reducing emissions generated by port activity and increasing operational efficiency and service conditions for ships docking in the port.
Constanța South Container Terminal (CSCT) operates the South Container Terminal in the Port of Constanța under a concession contract valid until 2049. The company is part of the DP World group, one of the largest maritime operators and providers of integrated logistics services worldwide.
The project is implemented under the EBRD “Green Cities” program, offering the municipality of Constanța the opportunity to join this initiative and develop its own Green City Action Plan (GCAP). By reducing emissions generated by port activities, the investment contributes to achieving local environmental protection objectives. At the same time, the program includes digitalization solutions and promotes inclusion and gender equality.
The project corresponds to the EBRD’s Green Economy Transition (GET) objectives and is consistent with the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change. It also contributes to reducing emissions from transport and logistics activities and supports the sustainable development of the Port of Constanta, one of the most important ports in the Black Sea region.
The EBRD is a leading institutional investor in Romania. The Bank has invested a total of over 12.6 billion euro in 597 projects in Romania. Developing the country’s infrastructure and supporting energy security and the transition to a green economy are two of the Bank’s strategic priorities in the country.
