PPC Renewables Romania, the largest private investor in renewable energy in Romania, continues to develop its portfolio of hybrid capacities and will build a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 45.72 MW/91.44 MWh within the Fântânele Vest wind farm (Fântânele-Vest WPP). The project amounts to a total value of 98 million lei, of which 8 million lei is European co-financing, through the Modernization Fund.
Located in the South-East region, in the Fântânele commune, the BESS system will be implemented within the Fântânele-Vest wind farm, which is composed of 105 wind turbines, with a total installed power of 262.5 MW. Fântânele-Vest is part of the Fântânele-Cogealac wind farm, the largest onshore wind farm in Southeastern Europe. The 240 2.5 MW GE turbines have a total installed capacity of 600 MW and produce approximately 1.25 TWh annually, enough to cover the annual energy needs of approximately 500,000 households.
The Fântânele-Cogealac wind farm entered the PPC Renewables Romania portfolio at the end of 2024, and the storage project continues PPC Renewables Romania’s strategy to accelerate the expansion of its renewable energy portfolio with storage projects that can actively contribute to system stability, through the predictable production profile ensured by storing electricity in batteries.
In addition to the implementation of the storage system, the project involves the construction of the necessary infrastructure elements, the arrangement of exploitation, access and fencing roads, the implementation of safety lighting and monitoring systems, as well as the area arranged for operation, maintenance, security and site organization.
The project benefits from financing through the Modernization Fund – Supporting investments in the development of electrical energy storage capacities (batteries) connected to an existing renewable energy production facility. The investment amounts to a total value of 98,357,272.49 lei. The maximum value insured from the Modernization Fund is 8.33% of the total value of the project, namely 8,190,756.29 lei, and the value insured by PPC Renewables Romania is 90,166,516.20 lei.
