Distribuție Energie Electrică Romania (DEER) announces that the works related to the project “Construction of a 110/20/10 kV transformer station in the Someșeni neighborhood area, Cluj-Napoca municipality, Cluj county” have exceeded 70% implementation stage, with the objective to be put into operation by December 31, 2026.
The new transformer station is being built in the Cluj International Airport area and represents one of the most important investments carried out by DEER for the development and modernization of the electricity network in the Cluj-Napoca municipality and the metropolitan area, contributing to increasing the distribution capacity and supporting the economic and urban development of the region.
The project has a total value of 138,229,633.26 lei (VAT included), of which 86,805,080.57 lei represents non-reimbursable financing through the Modernization Fund, being the first project financed by the European Commission under Axis 3.2 – Support for the extension and modernization of the electricity distribution network. The financing contract was signed on 28 November 2023, and the completion date is 31 December 2026.
The implementation of this investment will ensure increased security in the electricity supply for existing consumers in the Someșeni district and the metropolitan area of Cluj-Napoca, including the localities of Apahida, Sânnicoară and Dezmir, as well as the possibility of connecting new users, in the context of the accelerated development of the area.
At the same time, the new energy node will eliminate existing limitations on the capacity of the distribution network, improve the quality parameters of the distributed electricity and create the necessary conditions for the integration of a larger number of prosumers and new capacities for the production of energy from renewable sources.

Through this project, we increase the capacity of the distribution network, improve the security of the electricity supply and prepare the infrastructure necessary for economic, urban development and for the integration of an increasing number of renewable energy sources. Investments in the distribution infrastructure are essential for building a modern, digitalized and resilient energy system”, stated the DEER General Director, Mihaela Rodica Suciu.
By building the 110/20/10 kV Someșeni Transformer Station, Distribuție Energie Electrică Romania continues its strategic investment program for the modernization and development of the energy infrastructure. The project is part of the series of major investments made by the company in recent years, after the commissioning of the 110/20 kV Leordina Transformer Station (2023), an investment worth 28.3 million lei, of which 22.57 million lei represented non-reimbursable financing, the Remetea Transformer Station (2024), with a value of 44.2 million lei, of which 22.1 million lei were provided from co-financing, and the 110/20 kV Sibiu Vest Transformer Station (2025), made through an investment of 70.3 million lei, of which 45.17 million lei were provided from non-reimbursable funds through the Modernization Fund.
With a total value of 138.2 million lei, the Someșeni Transformer Station represents one of the largest investments of this type carried out by DEER in recent years, thus confirming the company’s commitment to developing a modern distribution network with increased capacity, digitalized and resilient, capable of meeting increasing consumption demands, supporting economic and urban development and facilitating the integration of new energy production capacities from renewable sources.
