The Centre for Industrial Personnel Training (CPPI) in Bușteni is organising a professional training programme dedicated to battery energy storage systems (BESS) on 23-25 November 2026. The course will take place online via Zoom and will cover the technical, economic, financial and regulatory aspects of developing energy storage projects, with particular emphasis on system sizing, safety and profitability assessment.
The programme is designed for engineers, designers, project developers, consultants, investors and energy sector professionals. According to an announcement published by Mircea Ruba, Associate Professor at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, the aim is to develop the skills needed to assess and implement BESS projects, going beyond the selection of storage equipment.
From technology selection to profitability assessment
The first day will focus on BESS technologies and system architectures, including key components such as batteries, power conversion systems (PCS), battery management systems (BMS), energy management systems (EMS) and protection equipment.
Participants will examine economic indicators used in investment appraisal, including return on investment (ROI), internal rate of return (IRR) and levelised cost of energy (LCOE). The agenda also covers cost-benefit analysis, safety risks associated with thermal runaway, battery degradation, and battery reuse and recycling.
The second day will address commercial models and project financing conditions. Topics include combining multiple revenue streams (revenue stacking), energy market arbitrage, balancing services and peak shaving.
The programme will also cover power and energy capacity sizing, the integration of batteries with solar PV and wind installations, microgrids and electricity networks, as well as site selection criteria and applicable European and national regulations.
Practical exercises and BESS project assessment
The final day will focus on practical applications, including battery modelling and analysis exercises, the development of advanced BMS solutions and the assessment of techno-economic scenarios. Participants will use Excel-based calculation tools and review a technical specification for an energy storage project.
The integrated approach reflects the complexity of BESS investment decisions, where technical performance must be aligned with operating profiles, opportunities to monetise flexibility and costs over the system’s entire lifecycle.
Participation and registration
The participation fee is 1,500 lei per person, VAT-exempt. According to the organiser, participants will receive course notes, training materials and a certificate of participation in the professional training programme.
Registrations can be submitted to [email protected]. The programme coordinator is engineer Marian Zamfir Ilie, telephone +40 722 249 162. Further information is available from CPPI Bușteni and in the programme announcement.
