Romania-US trade grew more than investments in 2025, and the leap to a new level of economic cooperation depends, however, on Romania’s vision and capacity to ensure investment conditions in sectors of interest to American investors, claim representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania (AmCham).

In a new edition of the analysis “Romania-US Economic Relations”, the organization highlights the main coordinates of the economic relationship and the prospects for consolidating and transforming it into an anchor for Romania’s long-term economic growth.

According to a press release from AmCham, the intensification of trade and the maintenance of American investments, concentrated in strategic sectors such as technology, business services and advanced manufacturing, together with sectoral partnerships in energy and defense, consolidate the position of the United States among Romania’s most important economic partners. The growth of Romanian exports to the US market reflects the maturation and improvement of the competitiveness of the Romanian economy, strengthening the arguments for Romania to be perceived as a capable and reliable partner, the cited source claims.

Ranked 4th in the top of foreign investments in Romania, the US is the largest investor outside the EU and ranks 15th in the top of destination markets for Romanian exports of goods and services.

According to the most recent data on economic relations in 2025, Romanian exports of goods and services to the US reached 6.4 billion dollars in 2025 (15th place in the top of countries to which Romania exports), and imports from the US reached approximately 3 billion dollars (18th place in the top of countries from which Romania imports).

Services exports reached a historic high of over $4 billion (+19% compared to 2024 and 8% of total services exports), of which IT&C services represent about 60% ($2.4 billion, up 25% compared to 2024). Services imports from the US also recorded a significant increase, of 65%, representing 4% of Romania’s total services imports, and were concentrated in areas such as business services, IT&C and intellectual property.

At the same time, exports of goods exceeded $2.3 billion (+5%), almost double compared to a decade ago, and half of the types of goods exported are industrial and transport equipment, followed by manufactured goods.

The stock of US foreign direct investment (FDI) in Romania exceeds $9 billion (approximately 7% of the total FDI stock in Romania), with the US being the fourth largest investor in Romania and the largest non-EU investor (by country of origin of the final investor).

“This bilateral dynamic, presented in detail in the analysis carried out by AmCham Romania, is part of the evolution of transatlantic economic relations, which have continued to grow despite the changes that have marked trade and investment at a global level, reaching a record level of approximately 10 trillion USD in 2025, remaining the largest and most integrated economic relationship at a global level. Although trade statistics do not include defense acquisitions, they represent an important part of bilateral cooperation, complemented by the contribution of American companies in strategic areas, such as the development of “dual-use” technologies, the press release states.

According to representatives of the business community, the leap to a new level of economic cooperation depends essentially on Romania’s vision and capacity to ensure investment conditions in sectors of interest to American investors.

“The economic relationship between Romania and the United States is today on a solid trajectory, but the full potential of this partnership can only be harnessed in a stable and predictable environment. Amid the investment caution that marked the year 2025, the prolongation of tensions in domestic politics and their impact on the economic environment is generating concern among investors. Romania can no longer compete solely through low costs or geographical position. For investors, what matters more is the ability to ensure a predictable environment, to implement structural reforms and to develop infrastructure and skills relevant to the economy of the future. We need all of this to attract American investments, with high added value and long-term impact”, said the president of AmCham Romania, Vlad Boeriu.
