The value of bilateral trade between the UK and Romania reached £10.3bn in 2025, up 4.9% on the previous year, according to the latest data published by the UK Department for Business and Trade, cited by the British-Romanian Chamber of Commerce (BRCC).
In this range, British exports to Romania increased by 7%, to £3bn, while imports from Romania increased by 4%, to £7.3bn. Thus, Romania ranks 32nd in the ranking of the United Kingdom’s most important trading partners.
According to the cited source, trade in goods continues to be supported by strong activity in industry and manufacturing.
“Cars were the main category of goods imported by the United Kingdom from Romania, reaching a value of £1.3 billion and representing 30.4% of total British imports of goods from our country, after an annual increase of 18.4%. Other important categories included beverages and tobacco products, general industrial machinery and electrical equipment. British exports of goods to Romania were dominated by beverages and tobacco products, mechanical power generators and cars, highlighting the importance of already consolidated industrial supply chains and the potential for extensive sectoral cooperation,” a BRCC press release states.
British exports of services to Romania also increased by 16.1% and reached £1.5 billion (50.5% of total UK exports to Romania). In this context, travel was the most important service category, accounting for 37.1% of UK services exports to Romania and 43.2% of UK services imports from Romania, followed by other business services and transport.
“The latest figures mark a further increase in bilateral trade between the UK and Romania, confirming the positive evolution of the economic relationship. The contribution of key sectors such as the automotive industry, machinery and electrical equipment is particularly encouraging, along with the growing importance of business services. These results provide a solid basis for future development and point to new opportunities for investment, innovation and sectoral partnerships. Within the BRCC, we will continue to connect companies, institutions and industry leaders, helping to transform this favourable evolution into concrete projects and sustainable long-term growth”, declared BRCC President, Robert Uzună.
In terms of UK FDI in Romania, the stock stood at £752 million at the end of 2024, down 19.9% year-on-year, indicating an opportunity to consolidate investment projects and long-term capital commitment. In contrast, Romanian FDI in the UK increased by 22.2% to £303 million.
“Romania’s overall economic trajectory reinforces its growing importance in the European landscape. The country’s gross domestic product is estimated to reach $480.8 billion in 2026, which would place Romania in 39th place in the ranking of the world’s largest economies. Export activity is estimated to have supported around 2.6 million jobs in Romania in 2022, of which around 103,600 were supported by exports to the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom’s market share in Romania stood at 2.2% in 2024, indicating further potential for expansion, particularly in the automotive industry, advanced manufacturing, industrial machinery, electrical equipment, business services and technology. The combination of already consolidated industrial supply chains and the growing services component provides a solid basis for the development of a deeper and more integrated economic relationship between Romania and the United Kingdom,” notes the cited source.
The British-Romanian Chamber of Commerce is the leading organisation dedicated to promoting bilateral trade and investment between the United Kingdom and Romania. Founded in 1998, the entity operates independently and has offices in London, Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca.
