AJ Brand has signed agreements for the delivery of two standalone BESS projects with a total energy storage capacity of 480 MWh, together with two 400 kV substations, according to a company announcement. Construction is expected to begin shortly, while the contracts also include five years of operation and maintenance following commissioning.
The new projects expand AJ Brand’s activity in Romania’s utility-scale energy storage market, where the company had previously announced that it was delivering 2,204 MWh of BESS capacity across four projects, all scheduled for energisation in the second quarter of 2027. The portfolio includes hybrid solar PV + BESS and wind + BESS configurations, as well as standalone systems, together with substations and grid connection infrastructure, as part of complete EPC solutions.
The two projects totalling 480 MWh are being developed in collaboration with RTG (Nofar Energy), Colmobil Energy and Timnat, according to Adrian Stan, founder and Chairman of the Board of AJ Brand.
The integration of two 400 kV substations indicates the scale of the grid connection infrastructure associated with the projects. AJ Brand has not yet disclosed the power rating of the two systems in MW, their discharge duration, locations, investment value or the precise energisation schedule.
From renewable EPC to GWh-scale BESS portfolios
The announcement comes against the backdrop of a visible acceleration in AJ Brand’s energy storage activity. In June, the company reported a portfolio under execution of 2,204 MWh across four utility-scale projects in Romania, with energisation planned for Q2 2027. The projects combine standalone BESS systems and hybrid solutions with solar PV and wind generation and include grid connection infrastructure.
Based on the information published so far, it is not explicitly clear whether the two new projects totalling 480 MWh are included in the previously announced 2,204 MWh portfolio or represent additional contracts. In the absence of confirmation from the company, the capacities cannot be added together to calculate a new total portfolio.
AJ Brand’s move towards large-scale projects had already been signalled by Adrian Stan in March 2025. At the Energynomics conference dedicated to BESS technologies, he said that AJ Brand was preparing for a client an energy storage project of up to 480 MWh, located around 50 kilometres from Bucharest, next to a 640 MW solar PV capacity. At the time, the project was in the procurement stage.
