Verbund hybridises a wind turbine – adds solar panels, possibly batteries

Verbund Wind Power Romania will build a photovoltaic park in a wind farm and is considering adding electricity storage capacity, said Adrian Borotea, the company’s Country Manager.

“There are studies that say that solar and wind are complementary; when it’s windy, there’s less sun, when it’s sunny, there’s almost no wind. There are calculations that show that between 3% and 5% of a year the two overlap – these would be the intervals when you can eventually reach limitations in the energy delivered to the system”, at the conference “2024: A defining year for the renewable energy sector in Romania”.

Adrian Borotea then pointed out that according to the regulations in force, photovoltaic and wind capacities can be connected to the same station, with the same maximum power, “even if they practically double the installed power”. “You know that in wind turbines some of them are in predictive maintenance, and some of the PV panels are not operating 100%”, so there is an economic argument for this kind of hybridisation of plants already connected to a connection point. Adrian Borotea welcomed the fact that ANRE has issued the first rules encouraging investment in hybridisation, a concept long implemented abroad: “It makes sense to add this solar capacity. It would be ideal to have batteries included for maximum flexibility and we are already thinking about that,” he said.

The company operates a 226 MW wind farm in Tulcea county and is building another 400 MW wind farm. Photovoltaic panels will be added to the latter.

Verbund Wind Power Romania had a turnover of 720 million lei in 2022, an increase of 115%, and a net profit of 94 million lei.
