Sibiu International Airport, acting as the beneficiary, announces the signing of a financing contract with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI)—acting as the delegated body for funds allocated to Romania from the Modernisation Fund (MF) for energy efficiency in the transport sector—to implement the project “Construction of a photovoltaic park for self-consumption at Sibiu International Airport.” According to local media, the about 13 million lei project is supported by EU funding totaling 9.25 million lei through the Modernisation Fund.

The project’s primary objective is to increase energy independence and reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from airport operations. This will be achieved by establishing new capacity for generating electricity from renewable solar sources—intended for Sibiu International Airport’s own consumption—alongside an integrated electricity storage system.

As part of the project, a photovoltaic park comprising 2,882 fixed solar panels, with a total installed capacity of approximately 1,700.38 kWp, will be built on the airport premises. The investment also includes an integrated electricity storage system designed to optimize the use of generated energy and increase the self-consumption rate.

The electricity produced will be used primarily to power the airport’s own facilities, including terminals, technical infrastructure, lighting systems, and operational installations and equipment. The estimated average electricity generation from renewable sources is approximately 1,971.55 MWh/year, and the estimated percentage of total production used for self-consumption is 71.06%.
