The two hybrid ferries that will be built for Seaspan Ferries at Damen Mangalia will be equipped with 2 MW batteries, but will also allow the storage of more than 200 cubic meters of natural liquefied natural gas, the ministry of the Economy announced. Ferries have a length of 149 meters and have been designed to allow loading and transportation in corridors with a total length of 1,034 meters.

The two ships will enter Seaspan Ferries as part of the company’s fleet replacement program. Vessels will be classified by Bureau Veritas and will be operational in 2021, their construction starting at Damen Mangalia Shipyard this year.

“We proved, once again, that the partnership between Damen and Romania is a success. We are talking about yet another contract with multiple benefits for the largest construction site in Europe and, implicitly, for Romania’s economy. The contract confirms once again the extraordinary capacities we have in Romania and the highly qualified human resources on site. With the specialists from the Shipyard in Mangalia we have the capacity to build in Romania a wide range of vessels, complex, with high capacity and very advanced in terms of technology. Romania, thus, re-emerges as a leader in Europe in the naval construction,” said Niculae Bădălău, the minister of Economy.
