Rompetrol Energy, the operator of the cogeneration plant on the Petromidia platform, recorded solid operational results between December 30, 2025 and April 30, 2026, managing to support the technological processes of the largest refinery in the country – Petromidia Năvodari.
The plant, which passed all the tests and certifications necessary for continuous operation, produced, in the first four months, approximately 180,000 MWh of electricity.
Approximately 25% of the total was delivered to the National Energy System, confirming its important role in balancing the production and distribution of electricity in the Dobrogea region. The value of the energy transferred to the system was over 6 million dollars.
“The cogeneration plant represents an essential pillar of stability for both the Petromidia refinery and the National Energy System, contributing decisively to balancing the network in Dobrogea. The performances obtained reflect the professionalism, discipline and responsibility of our team, formed and consolidated alongside engineers with solid expertise in cogeneration. By integrating state-of-the-art equipment and through the coordinated operation of the entire system, we ensure operation at the highest standards of safety, efficiency and reliability”, declared Boris Bucur, General Manager of Rompetrol Energy.
The two groups (turbines together with steam boilers) in the plant configuration also produced 300,000 tons of technological steam, sufficient quantities to support the thermal and mechanical processes specific to the Petromidia refinery.
The plant also has the ability to operate in an isolated mode, without directly depending on the National Energy System, in the event of grid disruptions, which provides added security to the operational processes in the Petromidia refinery. Recently, the plant was involved in an exercise that tested this capacity.
The integration of the cogeneration plant reduces the energy dependence of the Petromidia refinery, optimizes costs and offers increased control over resources, with a potential positive effect on the financial performance of the KMG International Group (Rompetrol).
We recall that, as of December 30, 2025, Rompetrol Energy became the exclusive operator of the plant, ensuring a stable flow of electricity for the Năvodari platform, in the range of 60–80 MWh and supplying up to 180 tons of technological steam per hour.
The commissioning tests and technical checks were carried out between February and December 2025, during which the two gas turbines, the measurement and control systems, the natural gas and refinery gas supply facilities, as well as the steam circuits for the refinery were validated.
Electricity production began in the spring of last year, with the synchronization of the SGT-750 turbines with the National Energy System, and from the autumn the plant was able to supply electricity and steam simultaneously, with the entry into operation of the recovery boilers.
In October and December, over a period of 28 days, the endurance test was carried out – the last and most complex step before acceptance – which confirmed the stable operation of the plant under real operating conditions.
The SGT-750 turbines, the most important installed equipment, use gaseous fuel (mixture of natural gas and refinery gas) and generate approximately 39 MWh of electricity each.
The use of Siemens SGT-750 gas turbines represents a first for the Romanian energy sector, as these equipments are recognized for their high efficiency, operational flexibility and reliability in industrial operation.
Rompetrol Energy was established in 2012 to develop and operate the cogeneration plant, a project that represented one of the priority directions supported by the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund (FIEKR).
This project confirms the commitment of KMG International (Rompetrol) to remain a strategic investor in Romania, with a direct contribution to the modernization of the energy sector and to supporting the national economy.
