Romania has a total electricity production capacity of 18,545 MW, most of which are hydro and coal-fired power plants, according to official data posted on the website of the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE).

Thus, on March 11, in our country were hydropower plants with a total capacity of 6,644 MW, accounting for 35.8% of the total.

In second place are coal-fired power plants – 3,092 MW (16.7%). The wind farms follow at a short distance – 3,014 MW (16.3%).

Hydrocarbon power plants (gas, fuel oil) have a total capacity of 2,835 MW (15.4%), nuclear reactors – 1,413 MW (7.6%), photovoltaic panels – 1,393 (7.5%) and biomass power plants – 106.8 MW (0.6%).

Romania will have to restart, due to the war in Ukraine and on temporary basis, coal-fired power plants, a solution aimed at gaining independence in the shortest possible time, said Environment Minister Tanczos Barna, according to Agerpres.

He recalled in a Facebook post that Europe is in an energy crisis over which the devastation caused by the invasion of Ukraine has overlapped, so all European states are looking for solutions to reduce dependence on gas and oil imports from Russia.

“Beyond the devastation caused by the war, Europe is also in an energy crisis. All European states are looking for solutions to reduce dependence on gas and oil imports from Russia. In this context, Romania will have to take concrete, rational steps towards ensuring energy independence. We identify solutions so that all production capacities can be completed as a matter of urgency,” he said.
