The problems of consumers being disconnected from the electricity grid in the middle of the day due to voltage fluctuations could have been avoided if they were treated from the beginning in the same way as other energy producers, said Elena Popescu, CEO of Elektra Renewable Support.
“All congestion scenarios were already listed in the documents issued at connection. If prosumers would have been considered from the beginning as energy producers with similar responsibilities, many of the additional investments that are now needed to maintain grid connection would have been avoided”, said Popescu, at the conference “Energy Transition Cluj-Napoca 2025”, organized by Energynomics together with the Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry – AHK Romania.
She points out that solutions exist today, so just as large generators are obliged to invest in compensation equipment to stabilize the grid, the same model can be applied to prosumers, including at the low-voltage level.
Policy to date has been quick to encourage the development of prosumers through grants and incentives, leaving distributors to manage the networks. But they point out that they cannot control each prosumer’s equipment and, at the same time, they are not allowed to increase tariffs to cover the necessary investment.
Popescu also said that without a systemic approach and technical solutions applied to prosumers, grid stability will remain an acute problem.
