OMV Petrom announces the delivery of the fourth and last module of the 20 MW electrolyzer for green hydrogen production at the Petrobrazi refinery. The company is developing a capacity of 55 MW, through two projects: one of 20 MW and another of 35 MW. The SAF/HVO program involves total investments of 750 million euro: 560 million eurosfor the construction of the SAF/HVO unit and 190 million eurosfor the two green hydrogen production facilities.
“We are progressing with the development of one of the largest green hydrogen production capacities in Romania. All components of the 20 MW electrolyzer have been delivered. In the coming period, deliveries will continue for the second green hydrogen project, with a capacity of 35 MW, which reflects the sustained progress of the investment,” said Radu Căprău, member of the OMV Petrom Directorate for Refining and Marketing.
The 20 MW electrolyzer will produce approximately 3,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, obtained by electrolyzing water with energy from renewable sources. It will be used in the production processes for fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO).
The equipment is supplied by Neuman & Esser (Germany), and the construction works, logistics, component manufacturing and module assembly at Petrobrazi are carried out by Kraftanlagen Romania, in partnership with local suppliers. The 20 MW project benefits from approximately EUR 21 million in non-reimbursable funds through the PNRR.
With an annual capacity of 250,000 tons, the new unit will position OMV Petrom as one of the largest producers of sustainable fuels in South-Eastern Europe. Construction works, which started last year, are progressing according to plan.
The two green hydrogen projects, with a total installed capacity of 55 MW and an estimated annual production of approximately 8,000 tons, will support the production of sustainable fuels SAF and HVO, obtained from vegetable oils and waste oils. These fuels can reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65% over the entire life cycle and are compatible with existing infrastructure.
