Austrian energy group OMV announced that it has abandoned plans to take over a stake in a Gazprom gas field project and is reviewing its role in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, Reuters reports.

The decision comes after several Western companies sought to exit the Russian market, following sanctions imposed on Moscow for invading Ukraine.

“Today, the OMV Executive Committee has decided not to negotiate with Gazprom on the potential acquisition of a 24.98% stake in the Achimov 4A/ 5A development phase in the Urengoy gas field and will terminate the agreement on October 3, 2018. OMV will also review its involvement in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline,” the company said, according to Agerpres.

OMV is one of five Western companies to join as financing partners in the Gazprom-led infrastructure project.

Last week, German authorities suspended procedures to authorize the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a $11 billion project that would have doubled Russian gas supplies to Germany in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
