The Ministry of Finance (MF) reduces by 25% the temporary reduction of excise duty applicable to standard diesel for the period 1 – 15 September 2026, following the new bimonthly assessment provided for by the mechanism established by Law no. 162/2026 on the declaration of a crisis situation on the crude oil and/or petroleum products market.

According to a press release from the MF, the measure follows the intervention from the second half of August, when the reduction was 20% and is calibrated directly against the backdrop of new increases in international quotations and pump prices, with the aim of protecting citizens’ purchasing power and economic stability.

The new adjustment represents a decrease of 701.07 lei/1,000 liters, respectively 829.69 lei/ton.

Thus, between September 1 and 15, 2026, the effective excise duty level for standard diesel on the domestic market will be 2,103.22 lei/1,000 liters, or 2,489.05 lei/ton, according to Agerpres.

“The mechanism provided for by Law no. 162/2026 (on the declaration of a crisis situation on the crude oil and/or petroleum products market, the temporary reduction of the excise duty on diesel, the establishment of the solidarity contribution, as well as for establishing measures to protect the economy, the population and the functioning of the energy market – editor’s note) operates gradually, depending on developments in the international market. In the context of the pressures of the last two weeks, the level of the excise duty reduction on diesel has increased from 20% to 25%. It is a temporary and calibrated intervention, intended to reduce part of the fiscal pressure on the price, within the limits within which it can be absorbed by the market and transmitted further into the economy”, stated the Minister of Finance, Alexandru Nazare, quoted in the press release.

The update of the support level for the first half of September reflects the recent dynamics in the market, namely the variation of Platts diesel prices (VPM) of +45.65%, and the variation of the average standard price (VM) is +25.45%.

These data require, according to the legal formula, the extension of the reduction to the threshold of 25% of the base level established by the Fiscal Code.

“The intervention aims to limit the chain propagation effect of fuel costs, especially in the transport and logistics sector, with a direct impact on consumer goods prices. The mechanism established by Law no. 162/2026 operates dynamically, through periodic reassessments every two weeks. The Ministry of Finance will continuously monitor market indicators and will recalibrate the excise duty level depending on the evolution of international prices and pump prices,” the statement said.
