MET International, the trading and wholesale division of MET Group, an integrated energy company headquartered in Switzerland, and Shell have entered into a new long-term agreement to purchase LNG (liquefied natural gas), marking a significant new milestone in their long-standing collaboration in the LNG and natural gas trading segment. The agreement supports MET Group’s objective to supply European customers with LNG from the United States, thereby strengthening security of supply and portfolio diversification.

Under the new agreement, Shell will supply MET with LNG from its US portfolio over a number of years, strengthening MET Group’s access to flexible sources of US LNG.

The transaction represents the latest step in the strategic and growing relationship between the two companies. In July 2024, MET and Shell signed a 10-year FOB (Free-On-Board) LNG purchase agreement, ensuring long-term access to LNG from the US while strengthening MET’s strategy to diversify its supply. In February 2026, the companies expanded their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Washington D.C., with the aim of identifying new LNG supply and trading opportunities that will contribute to strengthening Europe’s energy security. A concrete result of this approach is the Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) now signed by the two parties.

In the context of a growing demand for diversified supply portfolios, access to LNG from the US is becoming increasingly important for MET Group and its customers. LNG deliveries linked to the US market can help expand supply options while reducing exposure to the volatility of European natural gas benchmark prices, including through innovative pricing solutions offered by MET, such as contracts indexed to the US benchmark Henry Hub.

Huibert Vigeveno, CEO of MET Group, said: “Customers are at the heart of everything we do, and secure access to US LNG strengthens our ability to deliver greater flexibility and value to European energy markets. This customer-centric approach makes MET a pan-European energy champion, enabling us to offer the best possible services across the continent and further contribute to Europe’s security of energy supply.”

“Over the past decade, LNG has become a fundamental pillar of the global energy system, providing a safe and reliable source of energy for consumers around the world,” said Tom Summers, Executive Vice President, LNG Marketing and Trading, Shell. “We are pleased to expand our collaboration with MET Group and contribute to providing solutions that meet the needs of its customers.”
