KMG Rompetrol Development, the investment vehicle for retail operations of the Kazakh-Romanian Energy Investment Fund (FIEKR), has completed the project “Development of alternative fuels infrastructure on the A1 motorway at the RO-HU border”, co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF-Transport) and approved on March 15, 2023 by the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment.
The aim of the project was to install 12 300 kW charging stations (each equipped with two 150 kW charging points) and upgrade the grid connection, each with a power of 600 kVA. For technical and financial reasons, the project was implemented in 11 locations. The stations were located in service areas in Arad, Timiș, Hunedoara and Sibiu, managed on the basis of service concession contracts concluded with the National Road Infrastructure Management Company.
“The completed project certifies the commitments assumed in supporting the growth of mobility, the diversification of energy solutions, but also the reduction of environmental impact. This progress achieved is part of the efforts we are making in terms of decarbonization and is in line with the general strategy of the KMG International Group, which focuses on innovation, modernization and adaptation to a constantly changing market”, said Alua Amirova, Investment Director of KMG International (Rompetrol).
The stations integrated into the project can serve several types of vehicles, including heavy-duty ones. The newly installed facilities use a technology that allows for fast charging, with a complete cycle estimated to last approximately 20 minutes.
The stations are the first high-power units in the Rompetrol network to have integrated POS terminals. This solution complies with the requirements of the European AFIR Regulation and, at the same time, offers drivers transiting the A1 motorway a faster and more efficient charging experience.
The new stations are integrated with the Rompetrol EV-Charge mobile application, where customers can find information about the 11 stations currently included in the program, about the refuelings made, as well as tariffs.
“The project carried out with the financial support of the European Union will be a direct support for cross-border transport and will support our efforts to transition to mobility with reduced emissions. By adding this new facility for our customers, we are continuously developing the service spaces on the A1, unique in the country, where we offer integrated solutions, fully in line with people’s expectations and market trends”, added Laurențiu Colțănel, Director of Network Planning and Development Group at KMG International (Rompetrol).
The project “Development of alternative fuels infrastructure by Rompetrol on the A1 motorway at the RO-HU border” is co-financed by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF-Transport), the total investment value being approximately 2.2 million euros, of which approximately 1 million euros were granted by the European Union. The project implementation period was 36 months, between November 10, 2022 and November 9, 2025.
