I pay for electricity, why am I asked to read the meter?!

The amount of electricity consumed is indicated by the meter that registers the energy consumption per unit of time (kWh) related to each home. With the energy meter you can monitor exactly how much electricity is consumed and whether the bills correspond to these amounts.

At the same time, in the circuit of the energy made available by the producer and taken over by the carrier through the high-voltage networks and the transformer stations, an important role belongs to the distributor, who brings it to people’s homes and companies.

Energy distributors are those who take the energy through other types of networks and take it to consumers’ electrical panels and their meters. They are also the ones who make sure that the networks work, invest in their development to increase the quality of services, intervene in case of breakdowns and check the level of consumption by reading the meters. The electricity distributor has a legal obligation to read the electricity meter index at maximum intervals of 3 months. At the same time, the holder of the place of consumption has the obligation to allow the access of the distribution operator to read the meter, if it is mounted inside the property.

Full information about the index, meter reading procedures and regulations and how consumption is billed can be found on the dedicated website www.autocitiri.ro.

Even when the consumer sends the index monthly, the law obliges the distributor to read the index every 3 months at most. Transmitting the self-read index is a right, a facility granted to consumers, and not an obligation. The distribution tariffs regulated by ANRE only include the costs of the four annual readings that the distribution operator must make.

Between the 2 readings of the distribution operator, the consumer is billed by the supplier for an estimated consumption (quantities can be found in the consumption agreement, attached to the supply contract) if it does not transmit the self-read index. Thus, after the distributor’s readings, it will receive regularization invoices, plus or minus, depending on how much it actually consumed compared to the invoiced estimate.

In order to avoid regularization invoices for long periods (rarely possible in cases where customers have not secured access to the property in a timely manner) or with large values and to ensure the continuity of entering in the capped price consumption category, consumers have the option to transmit the monthly index by self-reading to the energy supplier. It is the best way to pay exactly the amount of electricity consumed and to forecast the amount of invoices. Furthermore, knowing consumption data also helps you to reduce energy waste. The statistics of ACUE members show that in conditions of increased concern with energy consumption, more than 30% of consumers send their self-read index to suppliers.
