Hybrid systems and storage secure Romania’s energy transition

Romania’s solar market is moving beyond the simple addition of new generation capacity, writes the Intersolar Summit Romania organizing team, before the summit scheduled on October 13-14, in Bucharest. As grid congestion increases and electricity prices become more volatile, developers and investors are turning towards hybrid projects that combine photovoltaic plants with battery storage. The practical implication is that project value will increasingly depend on flexibility and active revenue management, not only on installed capacity.

Batteries allow operators to store electricity during periods of high solar production, when the grid is congested or market prices are low, and sell it later when prices recover. This can limit losses from curtailment, support energy arbitrage and improve the long-term economics of solar assets. Flexible consumers, including heat pumps and electric vehicles, can also use more electricity during hours of abundant and cheaper solar generation.

The transition is also changing financing requirements. Banks and investors are looking more closely at merchant risk and at the ability of project operators to secure revenues through several business models. Projects combining solar generation, storage, dispatch and trading are therefore likely to be better positioned for financing than assets relying mainly on electricity sales during production hours.

New sources of demand could strengthen this model. Data centers, digital infrastructure and AI applications require reliable, round-the-clock electricity supplies, creating potential markets and buyer structures for hybrid renewable plants.

The next phase of Romania’s solar market will be shaped by the ability of developers to integrate storage, manage price risk and respond flexibly to grid and consumer needs.
